UPDATE: Realty Q&A: A 6-step Plan For Boosting Credit Score To Buy Home

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) -- Question: I need some assistance in cleaning up my very poor credit score of 638 from Trans Union and 559 from Equifax. It's not the result of any credit cards but poor choices (which I admit) and a divorce with little to no child support of three girls. I'm in my mid-forties and all three girls are over the age of 18.

My question is how do I increase my FICO score within the next 6-10 months and is there a reputable agency that can work on my behalf? I would like to purchase a home early next year. I know there's a lot of work that needs to be done and would greatly appreciate any assistance you or an agency can provide.

Answer: I turned to attorney Edward Jamison, who operates a credit-repair law firm in Los Angeles, for help with this one because you did not mention any specific problems.

Suspect in retired L.A. officer's slaying sought

DIAMOND BAR - The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday asked for the public's help in the killing of a retired LAPD officer.

Ruben Whittington, 61, of Diamond Bar was shot Sunday on Lemon Avenue in Walnut while he waited for a tow truck to help with a flat tire, authorities said.

The shooting may have been during a robbery.

Officials are looking for anybody who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or person near 316 S. Lemon Ave., where Whittington was shot about 11:30 p.m., sheriff's Capt. Jim Curtis said.

"The senseless murder of a retired 21-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department ... it's just very difficult for us," Sheriff Lee Baca said. "Sgt. Whittington's unsolved murder is one that strikes us right at the core."

A proposal to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter is expected to be on the Walnut City Council's next agenda, Baca said.

Loan Probe Targets Athletic Depts.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will next turn the focus of his national student loan investigation from the administration office to the athletic department.

Cuomo has served nearly 40 universities with subpoenas and requests for documents. Cuomo wants information about deals between athletic departments and student financial services, which operate as university financial services.

Cuomo is looking into whether college athletic departments steered student athletes to education lenders in exchange for kickbacks.

The attorney general says the probe includes looking at how team names, mascots and colors were used to suggest the lending company was the college's preferred lender.

Bush Rejects Gas Tax To Fund Bridge Repair, Decries Hill Spending

President Bush yesterday rejected a gasoline tax increase to repair thousands of structurally deficient bridges such as the one that collapsed in Minneapolis, pointing the finger instead at Congress for what he called misguided spending policies that have neglected high priorities in favor of pork politics.

The president's broadside triggered a furious reaction from congressional Democrats, who said he is in no position to lecture anyone on priorities. The heated exchange suggested the issue of infrastructure safety, dramatized as cars plunged into the Mississippi River last week, has become one more front in a broader battle between the White House and Congress over national goals.

.

How Are NY's Bridges?

It was back in 1987 that a bridge collapsed and claimed 10 lives in New York State.

The disaster at the Schoharie Bridge on the State Thruway led to a round of inspections focused on bridge safety. Accidents, like the one in Minneapolis, leave many wondering whether New York State learned its lesson 20 years ago.

We hardly notice in our daily rush to work and home and stops along the way. We take the safety of our highway system for ranted. We believe that advances in technology have made the network of bridges and overpasses that we rely on, safe.

In the past, we had failures due to lack of knowledge. Now, we're having failures because of a lack of maintenance," Riyad Aboutaha of Syracuse University's School of Engineering said.

Aboutaha is training a new generation of civil engineers at Syracuse University's School of Engineering.
