Fire Damages Vacant House

Rochester firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant apartment house Wednesday morning.

The fire started in the rear of the Wilkins Street building just after 6 a.m. Firefighters say the blaze spread into the attic, making it tough to reach.

"Most of the fires that we have in the city, we are normally able to control them in the first few minutes in the operation, with one line, maybe a backup line," said Martin McMillan, Rochester Fire Department deputy chief. "We have four lines in operation at this particular fire right now, so we're working hard at the one."

One firefighter suffered a minor burn to his wrist. The building suffered extensive damage.

More female gearheads tune up rides for Cruise

Some women crave perfume or flowers for their birthdays. Teresa Boegler of Highland Township was thrilled when she got a 312-engine with a new transmission and performance cam. That's not surprising considering that she calls herself "T-Bird Teri," her "baby" is a coral-colored 1957 Thunderbird and she co-founded a Metro Detroit car club, Chicks With Classics.

"It's a lot more fun to be in the garage with all this stuff than being in the kitchen," she says.

While vintage car collecting has long been a male-dominated hobby, more women are showing up behind the wheels, getting their fingernails dirty under the hoods and displaying their classic cars at shows and cruise events, according to Woodward Dream Cruise officials and industry experts.

Joel Epstein, executive director of the Woodward Dream Cruise, says that female participation in the Dream Cruise is on the upswing.

Beware the perils of debit cards

The use of debit cards is rising much faster than consumers' appreciation of their risks.

The cards, which are not credit cards but often look like them, take money out of a person's bank account when a purchase is made. Despite the growing popularity of debit cards, many consumer groups recommend limiting their use, or not using them at all, because they don't have the same liability protections as traditional credit cards.

"Consumers need to think when they use these things," said Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer group in San Diego.

The use of debit cards is growing especially fast among young adults.

"More and more consumers are using debit cards over cash and checks because it is convenient," said Nancy Krattli, vice president of consumer debit products at Visa USA.

Luke Burkhart on the mend and raring to go

Factory Suzuki Pro Lite rider Luke Burkhart is making a strong recovery after recent surgery to repair a damaged thumb that saw the super fast Kiwi forced to make an early withdrawal from the Nokia MX Nationals.

Since undergoing surgery 4 weeks ago Burkhart has spent time catching up with friends and generally doing things that he is unable to do when fully committed to his job of racing the Pro Lites for the factory backed Suzuki race team.

"For the first 3-4 weeks after surgery i had a fair bit of pain so there wasn't a hell of a lot i could do with myself except catch up with people and do some things we don't get time to do when in full swing race season," Burkhart told Fullnoise.

"Three weeks ago i started training on stationary cycles and going for decent walks to get my body livened up and ready to start hammering it again.
