Drill could reach trapped miners early Friday

HUNTINGTON, Utah (CNN) -- Rescuers believe they are closing in on six workers trapped since Monday in a central Utah mine after the mine tunnel collapsed, authorities said Thursday.

"Things are happening very rapidly now," mine owner Bob Murray, president and CEO of Murray Energy, said Thursday evening. Officials are drilling bore holes into a cavity where the miners are believed to be. They hope to drop cameras and a two-way communication device into the holes to establish whether the men are still alive and, if so, establish communication with them.

A 2.5-inch bore hole had penetrated to 1,730 feet as of 6 p.m. (8 p.m. ET), said Richard Stickler, assistant secretary of the Department of Labor for mine safety and health.

Suit complicates Ronco's bankruptcy case

A fight between a porn star and the former chief financial officer of her adult video company is the latest twist in the made-for-television bankruptcy case of Veg-O-Matic maker Ronco Corp.

Ronco CFO Ronald Craig Stone faces allegations from Jill Kelly of misappropriating funds and driving her adult movie company, Jill Kelly Productions, into bankruptcy. Stone was fired after the company filed for bankruptcy in August 2005. He joined Ronco shortly afterward.

Ronco, a Simi Valley, Calif., gadget-maker, last month sought protection from its creditors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The company, which owes creditors about $32.7 million, has said it intends to sell its assets.

Richard Allen, a former Ronco chief executive who also is a shareholder, now is arguing in court papers that Stone's $400,000 salary should not be paid until a "full investigation" is completed of the misappropriation claims and other allegations of misconduct by Stone, including insider trading at Ronco.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Ford surprised Wall Street Thursday by posting its first quarterly profit in two years. Then it spoiled the party by warning investors that it still expects big losses in the next two quarters and no return to full-year profitability until 2009.

Ford squeezed most of the gains out through cost cutting, mainly with a roughly 30 percent decline in jobs, and good sales overseas.

Now Ford needs its North American division to start turning a profit. That could be difficult with the company's U.S. rivals and Japanese automakers breathing down its neck.

Say hello to the easy riders

AT A recent convention of Harley-Davidson dealers, marketing consultant Delia Passi was sharing the finer points of selling to women with her audience of about 150, many of whom wore boots, jeans and tattoos. One wore a T-shirt that read, "Born to Party, Forced to Work."

Neatly groomed hair is a good start, she said. Always maintain eye contact. Keep those handshakes firm, but not too firm. Clean the bathrooms. Set up a play area for children. And don't forget the little things that can help draw in passers-by. "Put a plant out there to say you are female-friendly," she said.

Students Aided in Solving Crimes

With are a variety of careers available in the criminal justice field, students got a look at what many of them entail.

Roberts Wesleyan and Bryant and Stratton Colleges co-sponsored a forum Wednesday night outlining the different jobs available and how the criminal justice system works.

"They're going to find out that what we do and the scenarios we talk about are things that maybe are not going to be at the top of their list for their careers," explained Bob Trowbridge, a detective sergeant with the Greece Police Department. “But if they like what we're talking about we're certainly in hopes they want to proceed and go on further with the education and become officers."

Mike Pultorak's goal is to one day join the Monroe County Sheriff's Department road patrol. The Chili native says he's always yearned for a career in law enforcement.
