EMachines Class Action

We are initiating a Class Action law suit against eMachines computers due to the extremely high failure rate of their motherboards on certain models. If you would like to participate, send us the model number and serial number to canyonlands@theriver.com with the approximate date purchased, and location of purchase, along with a way to contact you. Models we are targeting so far: W2686, T-2042, T-2898, T-2682, T-2885, and T-1140. We now have 84 machines on hand as part of this campaign. I have never seen such a massive failure of such an expensive component, for which eMachines wants a $150 plus shipping for replacement with a tattooed motherboard. We are also considering action on Sony VAIO laptops of certain models. This is a non-profit action

CWS responding to weather emergencies in India, China, and Pakistan

NEW YORK CITY, Aug. 14, 2007--Humanitarian agency Church World service is accepting donations to help provide emergency food, clothing, shelter, and other supplies for victims of disasters in the Asian nations of India, China and Pakistan.

Tens of millions of people in these countries are struggling to put their lives back together in the aftermath of torrential rains and other weather disasters that devastated entire areas. Church World Serviceâs assistance will supplement efforts by churches and other aid agencies to respond to regional crises of such enormous magnitude.

In the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, at least 340 people are reported dead and another 45 million people have been affected in some way by the storms and flooding.

Putting a cap on payday lenders

Orem city officials have put a cap on the number of payday lending stores they will accept in their city, hoping to limit the opportunities for residents to become buried under loans with annual percentage rates as high as 800 percent.

The Orem City Council has adopted an ordinance, similar to other cities in Utah, that limits the number of deferred-deposit loan stores to one store for every 10,000 residents.

Leaders in Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County are considering similar ordinances.

Critics of payday lenders applaud such moves, but industry representatives said they will only hurt consumer choice.

Orem has 23 such stores for approximately 90,000 residents — Check City, Check Into Cash, Quick Loan, to name a few — far more than the nine it should have under the new ordinance.
