UPDATE: Realty Q&A: A 6-step Plan For Boosting Credit Score To Buy Home

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) -- Question: I need some assistance in cleaning up my very poor credit score of 638 from Trans Union and 559 from Equifax. It's not the result of any credit cards but poor choices (which I admit) and a divorce with little to no child support of three girls. I'm in my mid-forties and all three girls are over the age of 18.

My question is how do I increase my FICO score within the next 6-10 months and is there a reputable agency that can work on my behalf? I would like to purchase a home early next year. I know there's a lot of work that needs to be done and would greatly appreciate any assistance you or an agency can provide.

Answer: I turned to attorney Edward Jamison, who operates a credit-repair law firm in Los Angeles, for help with this one because you did not mention any specific problems.

Poll: Spitzer Wrong on Bruno, Right on Albany

This is interesting.

In a Siena poll out today, 51 percent of respondents said they believe Eliot Spitzer knew what his aides were up to when they tried getting state police to gather information about Joe Bruno.

But even more of them - 58 percent - say Spitzer “is committed to reforming Albany."

GKS Nationwide Acquisition Program Targets Small Providers of Engineering and Metrology Services

DETROIT, MI; August 8, 2007 - GKS Inspection Services, a global provider of dimensional measurement, 3D laser scanning and terrestrial scanning services since 1981, is seeking to acquire small engineering and metrology service bureaus around the U.S. to expand its range of coverage from coast to coast. Currently GKS has U.S. offices in Detroit, Minneapolis, and Seattle, as well as international locations in India, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore and the Netherlands. The GKS Employee-Partner Program is designed for self-employed engineers and metrologists who are already providing dimensional inspection, laser scanning, terrestrial scanning, or design engineering services to an existing customer base. The program is structured so that these self-employed technical experts can recoup their investments by selling their business to GKS and then combining forces with an industry leader while still maintaining their regional independence.

What the Russian papers say

The West, which only recently was actively pushing Martti Ahtisaari's Kosovo plan, is now no less ardently supporting the idea of dividing Kosovo between the two irreconcilable local groups, the Serbs and the Albanians, to settle the issue of its status. As for Russia, experts have said it should try and profit from the settlement models the West will insist on. "A unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence and its recognition by Western powers would give Moscow an equal right to propose a similar recognition of South Ossetia, Transdnestr and Abkhazia," said Andrei Shemyakin, deputy director of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. "The same holds true for the option of dividing Kosovo. That model could be applied to the Caucasus, a region where delineation lines might as well be drawn between Abkhazian and Georgian districts or between Georgian and Ossetian villages.

ID theft

Heard of skimming? Dumping? Logo hijacking? Check washing? How about phishing?

In the world of identity theft lingo, these are all ways scammers can take advantage of an unwitting consumer.

In the last five years, the number of victims in Mississippi has climbed 83 percent. The Federal Trade Commission reports 1,494 victims in 2006, up from 814 victims in 2002.

Dave Fulcher, a prosecutor who handles identity theft cases for the U.S. attorney's office, warned businesses have to be on the lookout for "insiders," or their own employees who might be participating in a scam.

"If you have an employee that's an insider, then you run the risk of having all the safety measures you put into place circumvented by that employee," he said.

Millions of Americans are receiving notices to monitor their accounts and credit information after a Florida company had a data breach in mid-July.
